E - Tickets
Aug - 30 - 2007
World Airline Association announced begining mid - 2008 all airline tickets will be stored electronically
on airline's computer files and travel agencies that booked / purchased them. In other words, no physical / paper tickets will be printed
to customers. The Association claims this is to save trees for print paper. It takes seventeen trees to produce a(1 / one) ton of usable paper
product. The e - tickets save 50,000 trees / yr. worldwide. Last paper-print airline tickets will be out in May 31, 2008, and they are valid until one year after that.
Psychologically, people still prefer to have "actual" tickets in hand, it gives them a sense of where they are going(an assurance to oneself) and
as prove of document. Paperprint - tickets are handy when applying passport / visas since issuers always ask prove of returning to one's home country before completing
applications. And there will be problems for people who cross borders without a need for visas, but need some sort of document to prove their returning home.
Airline Association is working with governments on this issue.
Additional problems travelers worry, but not limited to: Tickets lost in the e - file(mistake by person or machine), corrupted software / compter systems, hackers...etc..
