06.19.2008 ---> Alternative Smiley Smells Like the Perfect Time of Year

Sweet Cough

Now that we know cough and medicines posemore risk than benefit to children, it's nice to learn that a simple home solution may be the answer for nighttime coughing.

When Pennsylvania State Unversity researchers randomely gave 105 kids with upper resiratory infections "buckwheat honey", a common ordinary over-the-counter cough medicine or no treatment at all, they found the honey provided the greatest relief from coughs and sleep problems.

* * Honey is not recommended for infants 12 months or younger, however.

Grilling Season Now !

Wahhh...let's face it. Americans love enjoying great outdoors. From May to September is the period of each year to unleash the power of flame and grill.

Here's the ten million dollar question - Is it healthier to grill with propane or charcoal?

Inexperienced grillers go for propane ~ and for a healthy reason ...

In one study by scientists, charcoal-grilled meats contained more carcinogens called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) than meat heated with propane. When fats drip from meat, the fat burns and creates PAH-infused smoke, which coats what you're cooking. And charcoal makes more fumes than gas does. Also, charcoal flames are hotter, which chars meat and creates heterocyclic amines (HCAs), another carcinogen. Propane still produces some PAHs and HCAs, though, so take note with any grill.

> TRIM FAT. Lean meats create less drippings and less smoke, which reduces PAHs.

> MARINATE. Soaking meat in vinegar or lemon juice reduces HCAs by 90 percent.

> FLIP FREQUENTLY. Studies have shown that turning meat frequently results in fewer HCAs.

Instant Recall - - Remembering more - -

Researchers have found that among people 70 or older, the risk of thinking problems and mild memory loss was lower in 2002 than it had been for that age group in 1993. Why fewer senior moments? Scientists note that today's elders are better educated than their generations before and are more likely treat elevated choloesterol and high blood pressure, both of which can effect blood flow to the brain.

Too improve memory, the researchers suggests reading, doing crossword puzzles, exercising, eating well and taking medications on time as prescribed for person.

They call it POWER NAPS. Recent study of 30,000 adults published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, researchers determined that three to four 30-minute midday doze-offs per week reduced people's risk of a heart attack by 37 percent.

Focus on the Fine Points

Small ways to stand out from the style crowd.

SUNGLASSES. Metal frames are more versatile than plastic, from the expert, Kevin Harter, vice president of fashion at Bloomindales' department store. Be classic, but not gaudy, with brushed-gold/silver metal frames.

WATCH. The right watch is a long-term style investment. A brown leather band suggests refined rusticity, while a larger face with Arabic numerals keeps it looking modern.

PEN. Packing a nice pen is an easy way to stand out, says image coach Gloria Starr. Ballpoint or roller-ball pens are standard issue; go with a fountain pen for a polished touch.

WALLET. Keep your wallet sleek and uncluttered. Regularly strip down the contents to your daily essentials.

BELT. "A belt should never be the first thing you notice on a gentleman," says Marcy Carmack, creator of chicwardrobesolutions.com. Avoid anything too skinny, wide, or shiny.

KEY CHAIN. Unless you are a janitor or prison guard, ditch the plastic ring with 40 jangling keys. Look for a simple leather strap or a sterling key ring, and carry only what you need for that day.

A Hearty Brew

Starbucks' slogan: Serve and Protect. That's right! Sounds like from the police department's.

Drinking four or more 6-ounce cups of full-caffeine coffee a day reduces your risk of heart disease by 53%. Reserchers at Brooklyne College discovered when they analyzed a study tracking the caffeine intakes of 6,500 people for 2 years. However, the finding prompted an important question: Was the effect due to the high amount of caffeine in the coffee or the fact that they were packed with disease-fighting antioxidants? The scientists don't know, but they noted that decaffeined coffee, soda with caffeine, and antioxidant-rich tea failed to provide the same risk protection.

Burn off Sugar

A kitchen appliance could lead to a better diet. Toasting white bread makes it healthier, according to a U.K. study. When participants ate bread that had been frozen, thawed, and toasted, their blood sugar rose 39% less than it did when they consumed fresh slices.

Both freezing and toasting work on their own, too, reducing glycemic response by at least 28% each. It could be that these processes chemically alter starch and prevent it from breaking down to sugar, say the researchers. Store your loaves in the freezer and let slices defrost overnight at room tempeature before toasting.
